Description
As of August 2007, this crossing is deemed impassable, but a number of people have successfully negotiated it. (observed 2007/08/01)
The storms of November 2006 severely scoured out this area. Eliot Creek scoured out a new channel about 75 feet deeper than it used to be. On each side of the creek, there is a gully of steep, loose material. There is a climbing rope (on each side) to provide a handhold, without which it would be quite difficult.
On the northwest side of the creek, the trail goes up to the ridge looking over the creek. The November 2006 storms took out a section of the rough trail, so you have to go up a steeper route of loose material. It's more tiring than dangerous. Watch for orange flagging. Then, the trail goes down the ridge to the old Timberline Trail.
On the southeast side of the creek, the rough trail goes up to the ridge looking over the creek. This is unchanged in recent years, unaffected by the November 2006 storms. Then the trail goes down the backside of the ridge to the old Timberline Trail.
The actual stream crossing is fairly difficult, but not as bad as the White River Crossing or Newton Creek Crossing.
