Description
Nestled between the Siouxon Creek Valley and Swift Reservoir is this lesser traveled gem in Southwest Washington. Mount Mitchell is well known for its extraordinary view of the southern flank of Mount Saint Helens, but on a clear day it boasts views of Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, Silver Star Mountain and the Goat Rocks, as well.
The trailhead for Mount Mitchell is a mere hour and a half from Portland, and the trail to the top is only moderate in difficulty. What's more, the summit is an exposed, rocky butte with a magnificent 360 degree view, a view hidden by forest until the last quarter mile of you trek.
You are required to traverse some three miles of forest roads to get to the trailhead, but they are generally in good condition for a passenger car in the warmer months.
