Driving Directions

To find the Opal Lake trailhead, drive as though you were driving to Opal Creek (east of Salem on Highway 22, up the Little North Fork Road at Mehama), but when you reach the fork in the road, take the road headed downhill-this is FR2207. Continue on FR2207 for several miles, passing Shady Cove Campground, the upper trailhead of the Little North Fork Santiam River Trail and Sullivan Creek Falls before crossing Cedar Creek and heading uphill. Once you reach the top of the ridge, the trailhead should be close.

Alternately, you could drive up from Detroit by taking French Creek Road FR2223 just before you cross the bridge into Detroit, then turning off onto FR2207 until you reach the trailhead.

Portland Hikers Field Guide is built as a collaborative effort by its user community. While we make every effort to fact-check, information found here should be considered anecdotal. You should cross-check against other references before planning a hike. Trail routing and conditions are subject to change. Please contact us if you notice errors on this page.
