From Portland Hikers Field Guide

Upper trail to McNeil Point (Jerry Adams)

Contents

Description

The upper trail to McNeil Point is at mile 4.2 (5700') if you go across the face of Bald Mountain, 3.6 miles if you go direct. There's a sign saying "McNeil Point".

The upper trail used to go up the valley about 0.1 mile closer to the trailhead. This trail has been closed for revegetation. There's a temporary sign indicating this.

The upper trail to McNeil Point is much easier than the lower trail, but there are a couple steep slopes to traverse.

If you're going to Cairn Basin, stay on the main trail.
