From Portland Hikers Field Guide

Lower trail to McNeil Point (Jerry Adams)

Contents

Description

The lower trail to McNeil Point is at mile 3.3 (5260') if you take the recommended route across Bald Mountain or 2.7 miles if you go direct. It's unmarked. After the McNeil Lower Viewpoint, after the saddle a little after, and then after the 4th switchback (right, left, right, left) is the trail.

Remember this trail requires that you use your hands a bit, the upper trail is easier.

If you're going to Cairn Basin, keep on going on the main trail. The Timberline Trail crosses McGee Creek about 1/10 to the east.
