Yes, it's spelled wrong - but the arrow to "Whatum" Lake is correct. Watch for this sign at a fork in the Lolo Pass Road. (Tom Kloster)

Hikes starting here

Description

The saddle in Waucoma Ridge above Wahtum Lake is the starting point for several hikes. The access roads to the trailhead are mostly paved, but the last few miles are gravel. There is a decent sized wooded lot here with pit toilets.

This is a common drop off point for hikers camping at Wahtum Lake and heading down to the Columbia River Gorge on the Eagle Creek Trail. This area can also be used as a day use area, or drive-up campground. There are only a few campsites around the lake, and even fewer right on the water.

To get from the trailhead parking lot down to the lake's day use area and tent sites, you must go down a trail of a 1000 stairs (perhaps literally!).

Fees / Regulations

  • Northwest Forest Pass required.
  • Additional campsite fee payable at drop box. You must go choose your site first, then write the number on the drop box money envelope (meaning you have to walk the steps a minimum of three times!)

Driving Directions

To reach the trailhead, drive east of Portland on I-84 to Hood River and the Highway 35 junction. Follow Highway 35, following signs to Odell, then Dee. At Dee, cross the Hood River, and turn left, following signs, then veering right 5 miles from Dee where a sign points to Wahtum Lake. Follow paved Road 13 for 4.2 miles, then go right on paved Road 1310 for 6 miles to the trailhead. Parking can be tight at the trailhead, but there is plenty of space along the approach road, just south of the trailhead.
